Team Urbana Boulders
Fall 2017 USAC Youth Bouldering Competition Team
Saturday Skills Workshops:
These five hour workshops are open to any youth climbers interesting in honing their skills and pushing themselves - no experience necessary. There is no minimum age, but climbers must be able to focus and participate for the whole class time. The purpose of these workshops are to prepare for Team Urbana Boulders Tryouts on September 2, 2017, and the USA Climbing bouldering season competitions. Workshops are independent of one another. Here are the details and the schedule for Saturday Workshops:
- Each workshop is from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M.
- Bring a sack lunch and a snack.
- $66 per workshop for non-members
- $50 per workshop for UB Members
- July 29 – Footwork
Description: We will solidify the foundational footwork techniques of smearing, edging, and toeing a pocket before developing the more challenging skills of heel hooks, toe hooks, bat hangs, and figure fours.
- August 5 – Flexibility and Balance
Description: We will discuss the mental components of precision work, such as finding center, breathing correctly, muscle isolation, and visualization, as well as doing lots of exercises and practicing.
- August 12 – Power
Description: Pump it up! Prepare for some seriously tired muscles on Sunday. In addition to doing exercises, we will also discuss how to plan your training to avoid injury, generate a larger return for you time, and peak at comps.
- August 26 – Competition Strategy
Description: We will discuss the mental and practical components of both red point and on-sight comps, such as eating correctly, handling pressure and fear, warming up, resting, and visualization. We will hold a mini on-sight comp to practice what we've learned and self-evaluate.

Team Urbana Boulders Tryouts:
Tryouts will be held on September 2 at 10 A.M. There is a small fee of $5 to enter tryouts. Only 4 competitors from each category will be accepted on to the team. Criteria for team selection are the following four items:
- attitude (a positive attitude through success and failure)
- skill (at minimum, climbers should be able to consistently finish blues, V1)
- leadership (competitive athletes are role models in the gym)
- problem solving (sequence reading and outside-the-box thinking)
A list of who made the team will be posted at the conclusion of the tryouts. A 30 minute parent's information meeting will be held at noon.
The goal of our youth competition team is to encourage the physical and mental potential and self-driven development of each team member in a fun and safe environment to become the best person and climber they can be. The fall team will compete in USAC bouldering competitions. The season will run from September to mid-December. Practices will be every Monday and Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:30, excluding holidays. Climbers are expected to be a member of Urbana Boulders, join USA Climbing as a competitor, travel to and compete at 2 "local" comps, travel to and compete at the Regional Championship on Dec. 9, and supply 1 adult volunteer for each championship event they attend.
